History Of The Chevy Caprice

The Caprice name was first used as an option package on the 1965 Chevrolet Impala, but in 1966, it became a distinct model for Chevy. Some claim the car was named after Caprice Chapman, daughter of auto executive and prominent Indianapolis 500 official James P. Chapman, others say the name was coined by Bob Lund (GMC Chevrolet's General Sales Manager) after a nice restaurant he frequented in New York City. This car was produced from 1966 through 1996 and again through 2017, by GM, and was available as a hardtop, sedan, coupe, or wagon throughout its many generations.

Available in a number of different trim levels, as well as with a range of engine sizes and power outputs, it was one of GMC's most popular and best-selling cars on the market including more sales against their own Cadillac, Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile models. Plus it came with a lot of features over the years, such as air conditioning, power steering, power window motors, chrome trim, and performance parts for the Police Car specials.
