Firebird Parts

The first generation of Firebirds started back in 1967. The Firebird was based on the first generation of the Chevrolet Camaro, but featured a more aggressive and streamlined look. Comparatively, both the Camaro and the Firebird are mechanically the same car, but the Pontiac Firebird gave consumers an alternative styling option. Along with more luxury options, Firebirds are said to have a better interior than Camaros.

We’ve created a complete guide that covers the history of the Firebird and where you can find Firebird parts to restore yours.

History Of The Firebird

The Pontiac Firebird started in 1967 and featured a 230 cu in I6 engine in its base trim level. The inline-6 engine obviously didn’t sell as well as the V8 engines that were also available for the Firebird. In 1969, buyers could opt for a 250 cu in I6, 350 cu in V8, or a variety of 400 cu in V8s that could produce as high as 345 horsepower.

As far as body styles go, the 1969 Firebird could be had in a two-door hardtop or convertible, while the high-performance Trans Am could have a two-door hardtop almost exclusively. Pontiac only produced eight 1969 Trans Am convertibles making them one of the rarest cars ever to come out of General Motors.

The second generation of Firebirds were manufactured and sold between 1970-1981. They were available in coupe form only and did not offer any convertible models. Its redesigned body style in 1975 became the look for the F-body styling for a long period during the Firebird’s progression.

Ranging between 1982 to 1992, Pontiac offered third-generation Firebirds that were four-cylinders to reduce fuel consumption. Engineering efforts were also focused on improving aerodynamics and chassis development due to rising fuel costs during this time period. Along with the Camaro, the Firebird was completely redesigned. Major changes include a 62-degree windshield slope, a large glass-dominated hatchback, and two concealed pop-up headlights.

The fourth and final generation of Firebirds ranged from 1993 to 2002. Like the previous generation, Pontiac focused on improving aerodynamics. Notable improvements of the Firebird during this generation include dual airbags, four-wheel anti-lock brakes, 16-inch wheels, and many non-rusting composite body panels. The final generation of Firebirds offered trim levels of V6-powered Firebird, V8-powered Formula, and Trans Am.

Are Firebird Parts and Camaro Parts Interchangeable?

For anything mechanical like engine, transmission, or suspension parts, most Firebird parts can be installed on a Camaro as well. Where things start to get a little tricky is when you try to swap interior and exterior parts between the Camaro and Firebird. Because the two cars feature different styling, most of these kinds of parts are not interchangeable. Be sure to seek out Firebird specific interior and exterior parts to ensure you’re restoring that classic, exclusive look to your Firebird.
