The Pontiac Firebird is an American automobile and an institution that was built and produced by GM under the Pontiac name from 1967 to 2002. It was created as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang and Mercury Cougar. Introduced on February 23rd, 1967, simultaneously with GM's Chevy Camaro, it was a very comparable car in size and performance because they shared many of the same major components. It was also no coincidence that the Camaro and the Firebird were released at the same time as the 1967 Mercury Cougar, Ford's upscale, version of the Mustang which shared its chassis and drivetrain options.
An interesting side note is that Pontiac’s new model, "Firebird", was also used by GM for the General Motors Firebird in the 1950s and early 1960s concept cars that never made it to production.
