As the first SUV that was developed by Ford, five generations of the Bronco were sold from 1966 to 1996. A sixth generation of the Ford Bronco is coming and was announced for the 2021 model year. The Bronco name has been used on other Ford SUVs, including the compact Ford Bronco II which was active from 1984 to 1990, and the Ford Bronco Sport, a compact CUV.
The Bronco was developed to compete against the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout as a compact off-road vehicle using through 1977. In 1978, Ford made the Bronco bigger, on a frame that was a short-wheelbase version of the F-Series pickup truck. The full-size Bronco was designed to compete against the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger.
Ford discontinued the full-size Bronco in 1996 because the demand for larger 2 door SUVs had diminished, replacing it with the four-door Expedition and the larger Excursion. After 25 years on the shelf, Ford has decided to dust off the Bronco name with the sixth-generation as a mid-size SUV for the first time. This is an attempt to compete directly with Jeep Wrangler as both a two-door and a four-door convertible.
