History Of The Chevrolet Camaro

As we mentioned previously, the Camaro was first launched as a 1967 model year and was designed to compete against the Ford Mustang. The two cars made up what is called the pony car segment. A pony car was known as a small car featuring a large, powerful engine and usually came in a two-door coupe or 2 door convertible body style. This is true for both the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro but the Camaro often won the hearts of consumers thanks to its aggressive styling and powerful General Motors engines.

The first generation of the Chevrolet Camaro started in 1967 and ran through 1969. The car was based on the General Motors f-body platform end came in both a 2-door hardtop and 2-door convertible body style. The base model came with a 230 cubic inch inline 6-cylinder engine while the top models came with a 396 cubic-inch V8. Special editions of this first-generation Camaro include those super sport or SS, Rally Sport or RS, and the ultra-high-performance is Z/28 model. The Z/28 came standard with a 302 cubic inch V8 that was originally intended for racing and Trans Am series races.

The second generation of the Chevrolet Camaro started in 1970 and ran for over a decade until it ended in 1981.This was the first heavy restyling of the Chevrolet Camaro that created a sleeker body design with singular headlights and a sloped rear end. The car was still very similar to the first generation but included some new technology including the Z/28 models air induction hood scoop that had an intake door that opened and closed with throttle application, technology that was simply ahead of its time.

The third generation of Camaro started in 1982 and ran until 1992. This is one of the most common years of the Chevrolet Camaro and featured the iconic Iroc-Z Camaro model. The Iroc-Z featured a 350 cubic inch V8 paired with only an automatic transmission.

The fourth generation of the Chevrolet Camaro ran from 1993 to 2002 and this became known as the catfish Camaro due to its long and rounded body design and front fascia that seem to resemble that of a catfish. Today, this is one of the best bang for your buck performance cars on the market thanks to some Camaros receiving the legendary 5.7 L LS1 all aluminum engine that is known for being a bullet proof motor that can handle a lot of power. This is why the 4th generation became such a huge vehicle for the drag racing community.

The fifth generation of the Chevrolet Camaro started in 2010 and ran until 2015. For a while General Motors and taking a break from the pony car scene while they were developing a completely new platform with an entirely new design and a wide range of engine options. This new Camaro came with either a 3.6 L V6, 5.7 L V8, 6.2 L Supercharged V8, or available only in the Z/28 Model, a 7.0 L V8.
