What’s So Great About the Ford F350?

The Ford F350 has a long and impressive history as a top-tier workhorse. This model began production in the mid-1980s and ran until the early 2000s, with a few updates along the way. As one of the highest-end models, it has not always been the cheapest choice on the market. But the F350 has earned a reputation for strength, reliability and excellent performance in a range of conditions, from towing loads to off-roading. This truck has really earned its reputation as a do-anything pickup. It’s known for being incredibly tough, with a powerful engine and great towing and hauling capabilities. It’s a great work truck for contractors or anyone who needs a pickup that can haul big loads and tow heavy trailers. For towing, the F350 offers a choice between two engines, a 6.8L diesel or the 7.3L V8, with the diesel engine offering particularly impressive fuel economy. On the road, the F350 has a smooth and quiet ride, thanks in part to its standard independent suspension. While not a sporty truck, the F350’s ride is comfortable, even on rough roads.

A Brief History of the Ford F350

The Ford F350 was first released in 1986 as the F-series Super Duty model. This truck featured the same chassis as the F-150, but in a more robust design with a greater payload capacity. The F-series Super Duty line was a heavy-duty, long-wheelbase model that was designed to compete with the Chevrolet W-series and GMC W-series trucks. The F-series Super Duty pickup line was in production until 1997, when it was replaced by the current F-series lineup. The current F-series includes three models with a standard cab, an extended cab and a crew cab. The F-series Super Duty name was revived in 2018 for a special edition model. This one-off model is essentially a Ford F-450 and can be ordered with either a 6.8L diesel engine or a 5.4L V8 engine. Both engines are designed to handle heavy loads. The F-series Super Duty is currently in production, with the standard model starting at approximately $40,000 and the F-450 model selling for about $50,000.

The Early Years: 1986-1997

The F350 was the highest-end model of the F-series Super Duty line, designed for maximum towing and hauling capacity. It featured a 6.9L diesel engine that produced a maximum torque of 1,800 lb-ft. The F350 could tow up to 17,000 pounds and haul up to 5,000 pounds. It also featured a heavy-duty chassis and suspension, a power-assisted steering system and heavy-duty front and rear axles. The frame of the F350 was made with a hydroformed design, meaning that it was shaped with water pressure to reduce distortion. This design made the frame stronger and more durable than a frame made with conventional forging techniques. The F350 was available in regular and crew cab models and in a number of different exterior colors.

The Middle Years: 1998-2003

Ford made a number of changes to the F350 for the 1998 model year. The F350’s 6.9L diesel engine was updated to improve its power and torque, and the engine’s electronic governor was replaced with a mechanical governor. The gearing of the truck’s manual transmission was updated to improve its durability. Ford also reduced the weight of the F350 by replacing some of the truck’s steel components with aluminum. Ford added a number of new options and features to the F350 for the 1999 model year. The 6.9L diesel engine was also given a new turbocharger to boost its power and torque. The F350 received a new grille, new headlamps and new tail lamps. Ford added a new 6-speed manual transmission for the F350 for the 2000 model year. The 6.9L diesel engine was updated again for the 2001 model year to boost its power and torque.

The Latest Generation: 2004 to Present Day

For the 2004 model year, Ford updated the F350’s 6.8L diesel engine to improve its power and torque. Ford also changed the F350’s transmission for the 2004 model year. The F350’s transmission was given a new torque converter and rear differential to improve its performance. The F350 received a few new features for the 2005 model year. Ford made several changes to the F350’s interior for the 2006 model year. The F350’s 6.8L diesel engine was updated again for the 2007 model year to improve its power and torque. For the 2008 model year, Ford changed the F350’s interior again. The F350 received a few new features for the 2009 model year and Ford made a number of changes to the truck’s 6.8L diesel engine. The F350 received a new engine for the 2010 model year and Ford introduced an updated F-series platform for the 2011 model year.
